How Our Whey Is Processed

Exceptional whey starts with exceptional ingredients, but how that whey is processed matters too.

We chose an organic whey protein concentrate that is produced using a gentle, low-temperature ultrafiltration process. This method uses fine membranes to concentrate the naturally occurring whey proteins while separating out much of the lactose, minerals, and water. It allows the protein to be concentrated without relying on chemical separation techniques or aggressive processing.

Our whey is cold processed to minimize heat exposure throughout production, and it is never ion exchanged. Instead of using ion-exchange methods to isolate the protein, our supplier relies on membrane filtration to concentrate the whey.

Our supplier also describes this whey protein concentrate as non-denatured, meaning it is processed under conditions intended to help preserve the natural structure of the whey proteins.

But for us, quality isn’t something we wanted to evaluate from a label or specification sheet alone. We traveled to the facility in Crescent City, California, where our whey is produced, and saw the process firsthand. We wanted to understand exactly how our whey was being handled, from the facility itself to the filtration process.

That firsthand experience matters to us. It’s one thing to read about how a whey is processed. It’s another to stand inside the facility and see it for yourself.

The result is a whey protein concentrate selected for both its quality and the care that goes into processing it: organic whey, cold processed through ultrafiltration, never ion exchanged, and described by our supplier as non-denatured.

We believe great whey doesn’t need unnecessary complexity. It starts with a quality source and is handled with care from beginning to end.

Double Third-Party Lab Tested

Quality doesn’t stop with processing. Our protein is tested at multiple stages by independent third parties, providing multiple layers of confidence in the quality, safety, and authenticity of our product.

Our raw whey protein concentrate undergoes comprehensive third-party laboratory testing through our supplier before it is blended into our formula. Testing screens for potential contaminants and verifies the quality and authenticity of the whey.

Our finished protein then undergoes an additional layer of third-party testing and certification through the NSF Certified for Sport® program. The finished product is independently evaluated after all ingredients have been blended and the final formula is complete.

About Our Founder

Born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jamie Maitland is an entrepreneur, certified health coach, fitness instructor, and the visionary behind The Office 954 and The Unicorn Co.

In 2019, she opened The Office 954, a boutique fitness studio created to offer something different: exceptional workouts led by elite instructors in a high-energy, nightclub-inspired environment.

In 2020 Jamie pursued becoming a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, completed advanced studies in gut health, earned certification as a Cognitive Behavioral Life Coach, and created The 21-Day Reset, a program designed to help people develop greater self-awareness, challenge limiting beliefs, and create lasting change through daily choices.

Through years of working directly with clients, Jamie came to believe that one of the most overlooked aspects of health is the mind. Lasting change rarely begins with a workout, supplement, or diet. It begins with awareness, better questions, and the willingness to think for yourself.

That same curiosity eventually extended beyond behavior change and into the products people use every day. She has never been interested in accepting something simply because it is considered industry standard. Whether evaluating ingredients, visiting farms, developing products, or studying how things are made, she is constantly asking questions and looking for a better way.

At heart, Jamie is a builder. When existing solutions fall short, she believes there is value in creating new ones.

Working closely with both health-conscious consumers and athletes, Jamie noticed a gap in the marketplace. Many athletes required NSF Certified for Sport® products, yet many of those same products relied on gums, fillers, natural flavors, and poor quality ingredients she wouldn't choose herself.

She found herself asking a simple question: Why should anyone have to compromise?

That question became the foundation of The Unicorn Co.

Today, Jamie still teaches group fitness, leads 21-Day Resets, and remains actively involved in every product and formulation at The Unicorn Co. From ingredient sourcing and manufacturing to understanding the farms, animals, land, soil, and people behind each ingredient, she believes the details matter.
